The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Kwara State chapter, has urged commuters and motorists to keep emergency contacts handy and report suspicious movements to security agencies during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

The branch Chairman, AbdulRahman Onikijipa, gave the advice in Ilorin on Saturday during an interview.

According to him, the festive period is usually characterised by heavy movement of people and vehicles, hence the need for motorists and commuters to be security conscious.

Mr Onikijipa said the rising cases of kidnapping and insecurity in some parts of the country called for vigilance at all times.

“Festive periods are always busy with increased movement of motorists and commuters, especially on the roads. Everyone must remain vigilant.

“Both commuters and motorists must be safety conscious, particularly with the alarming rate of kidnapping and insecurity in some parts of the country.

“Keep emergency contacts handy and report suspicious movements to security agencies immediately,” he said.

He also advised motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle operators and other road users to avoid speeding, dangerous overtaking, drunk driving and unnecessary night journeys.

Mr Onikijipa further urged drivers to avoid isolated routes and sharing details of their movement with strangers.

“As passengers, avoid boarding overloaded or reckless vehicles. Do not be too desperate without observing necessary safety measures before boarding vehicles,” he said.

He, however, urged the public to celebrate responsibly, obey traffic rules and protect one another.
