Fire guts 10 shops in Katsina market

A fire outbreak in the early hours of Tuesday razed 10 shops at Katsina central market, popularly known as Fatima Baika Market.
Some traders blamed a solar-powered electricity inverter for the incident, alleging that the device triggered the inferno that swept through parts of the market.
The spokesperson for the state fire service, Rabe Audi, said a distress call was received shortly after the outbreak, prompting firefighters on duty to swiftly mobilise to the scene to contain the blaze.
He disclosed that 10 shops were affected by the fire, while firefighters succeeded in saving seven other shops along with the goods stored inside them.
He explained that the fire service successfully contained the fire and prevented it from spreading to other sections of the market.
The affected shops included those selling food items, beverages, curtains, textiles and other assorted goods.
Mr Audi said that firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to other shops where substantial properties were rescued, including a Peugeot 406 vehicle.
He said that 10 shops were completely destroyed before the fire could be fully brought under control due to the intensity of the inferno.
According to him, a comprehensive investigation is still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire outbreak.
He advised members of the public, especially users of solar inverter systems, to ensure proper electrical connections and regular maintenance of their appliances to prevent future fire outbreaks.
