Oyo: Oriyomi Hamzat emerges as Accord Party’s consensus governorship candidate

Popular radio broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat has emerged as the Accord Party’s consensus governorship candidate in Oyo state.
A statement on Tuesday by the state publicity secretary, Badru Idris, said Mr Hamzat’s emergence reflected the collective will, aspirations and democratic choice of the people.
The party’s spokesman thanked the national chairman of Accord, Maxwell Mgbudem and the deputy national secretary, AbdulRahman Danladi, for ensuring that democratic principles prevailed during the conduct of the party’s primary and for refusing to compromise the genuine mandate of the people despite pressures and distractions.
“The leadership and stakeholders of Accord Oyo state heartily congratulate our consensus gubernatorial candidate, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, following the successful conclusion of our party’s primary process,” Mr Idris said. “The outcome of today’s primary election serves as a testament to the determination of our members to preserve the sanctity of the party and resist every attempt to undermine the collective interest of the people.”
Mr Idris clarified that governorship aspirant Olakunle Busari was disqualified from the race for failing to meet the requirements for participation in the primary poll.
He referenced an official statement issued by the party’s National Working Committee, dated May 23, which disqualified the aspirant for failing to submit completed nomination forms within the stipulated deadline and for not appearing before the screening committee within the approved screening period.
The spokesman stated that the aspirant’s eventual appearance before the screening committee on Friday did not comply with the mandatory submission requirements set out in Sections 4(E) and 5(D) of the Guidelines for the Conduct of Primaries, 2026.
“Politics is guided by rules, timelines, and due process. No aspirant, regardless of status or influence, is above the regulations governing the party’s primary process. Facts remain sacred, and the official communication from the party speaks for itself,” Mr Idris stated.
Reacting to his emergence as the party’s consensus candidate, Mr Hamzat, on Tuesday, posted on his Facebook page, thanked the leadership of Accord, at both the state and national levels, as well as supporters, for believing in his vision to offer what he termed people-oriented leadership.
