The health committee and executives of the Oyo State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) correspondents’ chapel have initiated a partnership with NIKZAR Hospital to enhance healthcare delivery and medical outreach for members.

The collaboration followed a courtesy visit by the chapel executives, led by its chairman, Yinka Adeniran, to the management of NIKZAR Hospital in Ibadan on Monday.

During the meeting, the hospital’s human resources manager, Joseph Bolarinwa, outlined key areas of the proposed partnership, including the collaboration framework, mutual benefits, outreach locations, schedules and financial implications.

Mr Bolarinwa explained that the hospital’s support would primarily focus on medical outreach initiatives, noting that such programmes required significant resources and careful planning.

He urged the chapel leadership to clearly define the expected benefits of the partnership to ensure a productive and sustainable relationship between both organisations.

“Healthcare organisations are profit-oriented, but community outreach remains part of our corporate social responsibility. The essence of outreach is giving back to the community,” he said.

According to him, outreach programmes provide opportunities to render essential healthcare services to underserved populations without prioritising profit maximisation.

Mr Bolarinwa also proposed that members of the chapel consider enrolling under the hospital through a health maintenance organisation (HMO) arrangement.

He described the HMO option as a mutually beneficial initiative that could improve journalists’ access to healthcare while strengthening the hospital’s relationship with the media community.

Also speaking, one of the hospital’s directors, Tosin Ajisefinni, sought to know the level of awareness and acceptance of HMO schemes among journalists.

Mr Ajisefinni said understanding journalists’ participation in health insurance programmes would help both parties develop a sustainable healthcare partnership.

Responding, Mr Adeniran said the NUJ did not currently operate a unified HMO arrangement for its members across media organisations.

He said that some journalists might already be covered by separate healthcare plans provided by their respective employers.

The chairman explained that while NIKZAR Hospital would provide medical expertise and healthcare services, journalists would facilitate venues and mobilisation for outreach activities.

Mr Adeniran also invited the hospital’s management to participate in the chapel’s forthcoming Press Week, tentatively scheduled for August or September, though it might extend into December.

He appealed for an initial medical outreach programme before the Press Week to strengthen the proposed partnership and demonstrate its impact.

According to him, collaboration between healthcare institutions and the media can enhance public awareness and improve organisational visibility through corporate social responsibility initiatives.

“Partnership is about building relationships. While partnerships may expire, friendship endures. Through meaningful activities, organisations can enjoy positive publicity and broader public recognition,” he said.
