A 24-year-old domestic staff, Stephen Ajumogobia, who allegedly stole his employer’s foodstuffs and N300,000 cash, was on Wednesday arraigned before a magistrates’ court in Kaduna.

Mr Ajumogobia was charged with theft.

The prosecutor, Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 28 in Barnawa, Kaduna.

He said that the defendant stole 16 packets of spaghetti, four bottles of red wine, four cartons of noodles, one bag of rice, 28 pieces of Titus sardines, valued at an unknown amount, and N300,000 cash.

He said that the stolen items belonged to John Amos, who reported the matter at the police station.

Mr Leo said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 217 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017. Section 217 stipulates a five-year jail term for stealing if found guilty.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel admitted the defendant to bail of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He said that the sureties must show evidence of tax payment and must be gainfully employed.

Mr Emmanuel further said one of the sureties must be a relation of the defendant and adjourned the case until June 28 for hearing.
