President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Jimoh Ibrahim, on his election as chairman of the United Nations General Assembly Fifth Committee on Budget and Administration.

Mr Tinubu described the election as a significant achievement for Nigeria and a recognition of Mr Ibrahim’s wealth of experience in public service, diplomacy, business leadership and governance.

This was disclosed in a statement by presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday in Abuja. The president noted that Ibrahim’s election comes at a critical period for the UN as it pursues major financial realignments and institutional reforms aimed at enhancing effectiveness, accountability and long-term sustainability.

“Your election to chair this important committee within weeks of your official resumption at the UN validates your wealth of experience in public service, diplomacy, business leadership and governance.

“It also reflects your contributions as a member of the Nigerian Senate Committee on Budget and Appropriation and chairman of Inter-Parliamentary Relations. Your previous roles in the private sector and public service distinctly equip you to provide the steady, strategic leadership required for this important responsibility,” Mr Tinubu said.

The president also commended Ibrahim’s academic and professional credentials, describing him as a respected legal scholar with expertise in international taxation and business administration. According to Mr Tinubu, the ambassador has consistently demonstrated intellectual depth and a strong understanding of global governance and financial systems.

He said Mr Ibrahim’s experience provides valuable insight into fiscal management, institutional efficiency and sustainable growth.

Mr Tinubu expressed confidence that the envoy would justify the confidence reposed in him by the international community and make Nigeria proud through his work in the Fifth Committee. He added that Ibrahim’s appointment further validates the administration’s decision to appoint him as Nigeria’s permanent representative to the UN.

“I am confident that, just as the reforms at home are yielding positive results, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim’s experience and unwavering commitment to excellence will justify his selection as our permanent representative and make Nigeria proud in the work of the Fifth Committee and in support of the broader objectives of the United Nations.

The UN budget committee, officially known as the Fifth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, is the main committee responsible for administrative and budgetary matters.

It is responsible for negotiating and approving the UN’s regular biennial budget, peacekeeping budgets, and resource allocations.
