Bandits on Monday invaded Rukpete village in the Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State and kidnapped six villagers.

A vigilante, Abdullahi Sa’idu, told the Peoples Gazette on Tuesday that the attackers disrupted the peace of the community during the raid.

“They came into our community yesterday and kidnapped seven persons but released a woman with a child.

“Now, six people are in captivity. They invaded the town between 10 a.m to 11 a.m. They didn’t kill anyone,” he told The Gazette during a telephone call.

Mr Sa’idu told The Gazette that the bandits, who said shot indiscriminately to scare residents during the attack, were demanding N200 million before releasing the victims.

According to him, the attackers targeted shops and asked for specific individuals before abducting them.

He said, “We spoke to them this morning and they demanded N200 million before releasing the six farmers.”

Efforts to speak with the state police spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, were not successful as calls made to her mobile and a text message were had yet to be replied as of the time this report was filed.
