The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) has suspended its chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, over allegations of sexual misconduct.

The ICC, in a statement published on its website on Monday, announced Mr Khan’s  suspension “from duty with immediate effect, pending the final decision.”

The ICC said it would also “convene a special session of the Assembly of States Parties for it to consider the matter.”

The ICC said “The Court respectfully invites the Assembly of the State Parties to conclude the process with the highest priority.”

Mr Khan, 56, is a prominent British lawyer serving as prosecutor of the ICC since 2021. The sexual allegations against him first came up in 2024 but he denied any wrongdoing.

His suspension will see ICC’s 125 member states vote on whether to sack him or not.
