APC governorship candidate condemns Osun political violence

The All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Osun, Bola Oyebamiji, says democracy should be driven by ideas, not violence.
Mr Oyebamiji made the remark in a statement issued on Wednesday, reacting to recent political violence ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
He expressed concern over what he described as a growing climate of intimidation, violence and political intolerance across the state.
“Democracy is a contest of ideas, vision and service to the people. There is no political office worth the blood of any human being. No ambition is greater than any human life, and no electoral victory can justify violence against fellow citizens,” he said.
Mr Oyebamiji alleged that APC members participating in a peaceful Walk-to-Live rally in Ife were attacked by hoodlums linked to the ruling party.
He claimed that several participants were injured during the incident.
The APC candidate also alleged that supporters in Osogbo suffered physical assaults, while reports indicated that some individuals were shot during related incidents.
“The full extent of the injuries and any possible fatalities has not been independently verified. However, every report of violence against innocent citizens is deeply troubling and unacceptable,” he said.
According to him, the protection of life and property remains the primary responsibility of any government.
He added that many residents now feel increasingly vulnerable and insecure.
Looking ahead to the 2026 governorship election, Mr Oyebamiji pledged to prioritise citizens’ safety and security if elected governor.
He promised a zero-tolerance stance on criminality and vowed to uphold the rule of law.
Mr Oyebamiji also assured residents of equal treatment under his administration.
He urged APC supporters and other residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding despite alleged provocations.
He stressed that political differences should not lead to violence.
“Let us not respond to provocation with violence. Let us continue to place our faith in God and in the power of the ballot,” he said.
