La Liga giants Real Madrid have announced the appointment of José Mourinho as the new manager of the club, replacing Álvaro Arbeloa who left the post earlier this week.

The club confirmed the deal in a statement on Thursday, stating that the 63-year-old signed a contract that would keep him at the Bernabeu Stadium until at least 2029.

“The Board of Directors of Real Madrid C. F., meeting today, Thursday, June 11 and chaired by Florentino Pérez, has agreed to appoint José Mourinho as a first team coach for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029,” Real Madrid said.

The club added, “José Mourinho will join Real Madrid on July 13, the day the preseason will begin.”

The announcement marked the return of the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager to Real Madrid for the first time since leaving in 2013.

Real Madrid paid a whopping €15 million to Mourinho’s former employer Benfica to release him from his contract early.

His job would be to return the club back to winning ways as soon as possible after going two consecutive seasons without winning the league title.
