RTEAN cautions motorists against drunk driving

The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Kwara State chapter, has cautioned motorists against driving under the influence of alcohol and urged them to prioritise safety at all times.
The state chairman of the association, AbdulRahman Onikijipa, gave the advice in an interview in Ilorin on Saturday.
Mr Onikijipa described drunk driving as a dangerous practice that continues to pose a serious threat to road safety, often resulting in accidents, injuries, and loss of lives.
According to him, alcohol impairs judgment, reduces concentration, and slows reaction time, making it unsafe for anyone to operate a vehicle after consuming alcoholic beverages.
“It is wrong for any driver to consume alcohol and get behind the wheel. Alcohol affects judgment, concentration, and overall mental alertness.
“Motorists should always prioritise safety and avoid actions that could endanger their lives and those of their passengers.
“Drivers should also exercise caution, avoid over-speeding, and obey traffic regulations and road signs at all times,” he said.
The RTEAN chairman further advised motorists to remain vigilant while on the road and avoid reckless competition for passengers, a practice he said often contributes to road crashes.
He urged commercial drivers to embrace responsible driving habits and ensure that passenger safety remained their foremost priority.
He also called on transport operators and vehicle owners to sensitise drivers to the dangers of drunk driving and the need to comply with road safety regulations.
According to him, collective adherence to traffic rules and responsible conduct by road users will significantly reduce road accidents and promote safer highways nationwide.
