Outrage has trailed the death of a 21-year-old lady identified as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas who fell to death from a bridge in Brazil after workers reportedly conducting bungee jumping forgot to attach her to a safety cord.

Ms de Freitas was thrown from the Ponte do Esqueleto, aka Skeleton Bridge, in the municipality of Limeira, São Paulo, while participating in the activity.

A video of the incident circulating online showed the moment she was carried by staff members toward the edge of the bridge and thrown over while wearing a helmet but the safety cord was inadvertently disconnected. 

Brazil’s military police said witnesses alleged that Ms de Freitas was thrown without a rope and fell about 40 meters.

Reports noted that six people have been arrested in connection with the incident. It was gathered that three suspects were arrested at the scene and charged with homicide with implied malice.

It was further learnt that the deceased, a resident of Jandira and physical education teacher, had shared on her social media images of the activity minutes before her eventual death.

“It was a team there that wasn’t regulated; they didn’t even have authorization to be there. They ended up organizing this event. This fatality happened today, in my perception, due to a failure to verify and supervise the placement of the rope on the victim’s jump,” said a police delegate Andrea Dantas Levy. 

The incident triggered outrage from netizens. While some attributed it to a lack of attention, responsibility and prudence, others insisted the workers must be made to pay for their action.

“Tragic accidents like this occur due to a lack of prudence, caution, attention, responsibility, quality control of the services provided, technical safety, empathy and oversight. People need to value safety, health and life,” noted an Instagram user, gilberto.c.rodrigues.

Another user, willian1.9.8.7 said, “The three of them have to pay in the same way she lost her life. She won’t come back; they are in prison and in one or three years they will be released. They don’t deserve prison.”

“How can something like this happen, can you as organiser be so mentally impaired? Would this be my daughter? Sodom and Gomorrah!,” miniatur_bullterrier3012 stated.

Also, that_haitan_boss commented, “I watched the video, how in the hell did not one single person notice the rope wasn’t even attached while they walked her to the edge and threw her smh.”
