U.S. consul general Rick Swart has reaffirmed football’s role in strengthening Nigeria–United States relations.

Mr Swart spoke on Tuesday during the Freedom Cup novelty football tournament in Lagos. The event marked the U.S. 250th anniversary of independence.

The tournament held at Upbeat Centre, Lekki Phase 1, featured diplomatic, media and alumni teams.

It included a friendly match between Team Lagos State and the U.S. Consulate. Other teams were Team Truth, Team Opportunity, Team Legacy and Team Liberty.

Mr Swart praised the partnership between the two countries, describing sports as a bridge to cultural understanding.

“Football and cultural engagements remain strong bridges for mutual understanding between both nations,” he said.

He said Lagos required continuous collaboration through tourism, sports and cultural exchange platforms.

“This is what we want in Lagos. We must continue to engage our people,” Swart said.

The consul general added that people-to-people connections would deepen friendship and cooperation.

Mr Swart noted Nigeria’s influence in global sports despite the Super Eagles missing the ongoing World Cup.

According to him, about 15 footballers of Nigerian descent were nonetheless representing Nigeria at the tournament. The competition is hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s global influence in entertainment through music and creative talent.

Mr Swart mentioned Burna Boy and Davido, performing at the World Cup opening ceremony. He said Nigerian players and creatives continue contributing to global sporting and cultural spaces.

The diplomat expressed optimism that Nigeria would return stronger in future tournaments.

Acting public affairs officer of the U.S. consulate, Amanda Roach-Brown, praised the competition’s significance.

“This is our Freedom Cup because the United States is celebrating 250 years,” she said.

Ms Roach-Brown added that the tournament celebrated the FIFA World Cup 2026 hosted across 11 U.S. cities.

“We brought together Lagos state, the U.S. consulate and exchange programme participants,” Ms Roach-Brown said.

She said Nigerian journalists also joined to celebrate friendship through football.
