Trump govt moves to revoke citizenship of 250 naturalised Americans
The government of President Donald Trump is ramping up plans to revoke the citizenship of at least 250 naturalized Americans.
Citing a U.S. Department of State senior official familiar with the plans, CNN on Thursday reported that “the Trump administration plans to file at least 250 denaturalisation cases by October.”
This move is targeted at Americans who obtained their citizenship fraudulently or engaged in criminal acts.
Barely a week ago, the U.S. Department of Justice filed for the denaturalization of about 17 Americans who had been convicted of violent crimes, ranging from sex offenses against children to wire fraud and immigration fraud.
If effected, this would be the largest single revocation of U.S. citizenship in recent years. Data show that between 1990 and 2017, the Justice Department filed an average of 11 legal complaints per year seeking to denaturalize American citizens.
About 8 million people obtained U.S. citizenship through naturalisation in the past decade, according to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
