Ogunjobi continues dominant run, targets CBN Open final spot

Success Ogunjobi will continue her quest for another major title when she takes on Khadijat Mohammed in the women’s singles semi-final of the ongoing 2026 CBN National Open Championship in Abuja on Friday.

Ogunjobi has been in impressive form throughout the championship, dropping only five games on her way to the last four.

The youngster began her campaign in the round of 32 with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory over Bunmi Are before defeating Gloria Samuel 6-0, 6-3 in the round of 16.

She maintained her dominance in the quarter-finals, dispatching Mary Udofa 6-2, 6-0 to secure her place in the semi-finals.

Mohammed has also enjoyed an impressive run to the penultimate stage of the competition.

She opened her campaign with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Timipre Maxwell before overcoming Toluwalashe Agunbiade 6-1, 6-0 in the round of 16.

The in-form Mohammed then defeated Favour Godwin 6-0, 6-1 in the quarter-finals, setting up another clash with Ogunjobi.

In the second women’s singles semi-final, Etoro Bassey will face Bright Emmanuel-Essien at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Ogunjobi and Mohammed recently met at the 2026 NASCO/ITF J30 World Tennis Tour Junior Championship, which concluded on June 14, with Ms Ogunjobi emerging victorious in both encounters.

In the first leg of the championship, Ms Ogunjobi rallied from a set down to defeat Mohammed 6-7(5), 6-3, and 6-1 and claim the Under-18 girls’ singles title.

Ogunjobi followed up the feat in the second leg, defeating Mohammed 6-2, 6-1 to retain the title. She also teamed up with Emmanuel Kwange to win the girls’ doubles title, defeating Mohammed and Sri Lanka’s V.D. Rashmi Omaye Wijewardana 6-1, 6-2 in the final.

The 2026 CBN National Open Championship features men’s and women’s singles and doubles events, as well as wheelchair tennis competitions.

The 47th edition of the CBN-sponsored Senior Tennis Championship began on June 12 with the qualifying rounds, while the main draw commenced on Monday and is scheduled to end on Saturday in Abuja.

Michael Emmanuel and Adesuwa Osabuohien won the men’s and women’s singles titles, respectively, at the 46th edition of the championship.
