President Bola Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi.

Mr Adeniyi’s first tenure extension, which ought to have expired on August 1, 2026, will now expire in February 2027.

This is contained in a statement by the president’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, on Friday in Abuja.

According to Mr Onanuga, the extension is intended to enable Adeniyi to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window project and ensure a smooth leadership transition in the service.

During the period, Mr Adeniyi will work with the NCS Board to oversee the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the retirement of officers who have attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or completed 35 years in service.

Mr Adeniyi joined the NCS after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in the late 1980s.

He rose through the ranks, becoming Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.

Mr Tinubu appointed him Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023.
