NBSA urges Nigerians to donate blood to combat national shortages

The National Blood Service Agency has urged Nigerians to embrace voluntary blood donation to address critical national blood shortages that severely affect emergency surgeries and maternal health services.
The acting director of administration at the NBSA, Bode Oguntuase, made the call at an awareness campaign through community engagement, educational institutions, faith-based organisations, and other stakeholders in Lokoja to encourage more people to donate blood voluntarily.
“Many people attend blood donation awareness events, but only a few eventually donate blood. This creates a gap in the blood supply needed to save lives during emergencies, surgeries, childbirth complications, and treatment of various medical conditions,” he said.
Mr Oguntuase reckoned that misconceptions about blood donation, including concerns about nutrition and personal health, often discourage willing donors.
He reiterated that healthy individuals can safely donate blood and help save lives in their communities.
He further added that people who have witnessed situations in which family members or loved ones required blood transfusions often understand the critical importance of having blood readily available in hospitals.
The agency appealed to all eligible Nigerians to make voluntary blood donation a regular habit.
“Every unit of blood donated has the potential to save lives and provide hope to patients facing life-threatening conditions,” he said.
He noted that the agency will continue its sensitisation efforts through the distribution of handbills, placement of banners at strategic locations, and collaboration with government agencies and community organisations to promote voluntary blood donation.
