UNICAL VC urges new doctors to exhibit compassion in practice
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Offiong Offiong, has urged new doctors to prioritise compassion.
Mr Offiong gave the charge on Tuesday during the 56th Physicians’ oath-taking ceremony for medical and dental graduates.
The ceremony inducted 92 graduates into the medical profession after successfully completing their academic training.
Represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Ekaette Enang, Mr Offiong congratulated the inductees.
He said the university was proud of producing skilled medical practitioners contributing globally.
According to him, UNICAL’s reputation was built on excellence, professionalism and quality healthcare delivery.
He expressed confidence that the new doctors would uphold the institution’s tradition.
“Be great ambassadors of this institution and uphold the ethics and oath you are taking today,” he said.
The vice chancellor urged the graduates to listen carefully to patients and show kindness.
He stressed that doctors must demonstrate genuine commitment towards helping people in need.
Mr Offiong said empathy remained essential in building trust between medical professionals and patients.
The Provost, College of Medical Sciences, Prof. Ngim Ngim, praised the graduates’ resilience.
Mr Ngim commended their dedication despite challenges experienced throughout their medical training.
He advised them to remain loyal to their alma mater and protect its values.
The provost urged the new doctors to place patients at the centre of practice.
He also encouraged strict adherence to professional ethics and medical standards.
The Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Dr Fatima Kyari, warned against misconduct.
Ms Kyari urged the inductees to embrace discipline, integrity and professionalism throughout their careers.
Delivering the Sponsio Academica Lecture, Prof. Maxwell U. Anah described medicine as noble.
According to him, the profession is dedicated to preserving lives and serving humanity.
Mr Anah noted that medical excellence required lifelong learning, teamwork and resilience.
He urged the graduates to pursue continuous knowledge and mentorship opportunities.
Speaking on behalf of the graduands, overall best student, Dr Ziregbe Eshemitan, pledged commitment.
Mr Eshemitan said the new doctors would uphold medicine’s ideals and serve humanity faithfully.
