Xenophobia: Tinubu govt evacuates more Nigerians from South Africa
President Bola Tinubu’s government has evacuated 66 Nigerians from South Africa amid xenophobic attacks in the country.
The evacuees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos at about 8:50 p.m. on Wednesday following the evacuation exercise approved by the president in response to the xenophobic violence experienced by Nigerians in South Africa.
The head of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) office in Lagos, Dipo Onabowale, said the evacuation was facilitated by Kunle Soname, chairman and chief executive officer of ValueJet, while officials of the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa accompanied the returnees.
Mr Onabowale commended Mr Tinubu for approving the evacuation and noted that the 66 returnees constituted the second batch.
He added that logistical challenges encountered during the first evacuation exercise were being addressed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu has assured that all registered Nigerians in South Africa would be evacuated,” Mr Onabowale said.
