NAPTIP rescues 64 children, others trafficked to Ghana, Libya

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in Ebonyi has said that it rescued over 64 survivors of human trafficking between 2022 and 2026.
The state commander, Offor Berther, disclosed this on Friday while briefing journalists on the command’s achievements since its establishment in the state.
Ms Offor said the rescued persons comprised children and adults, who were trafficked to Ghana, Libya, and other parts of the country.
According to her, the command arrested over 90 suspects in connection with various human trafficking and related offences.
She further said that about 74 cases had been investigated, while eight were pending in courts.
The NAPTIP chief disclosed that the agency had intensified public enlightenment campaigns, taking anti-human trafficking sensitisation programmes to 64 schools in the state.
“Anti-trafficking vanguard and brigade groups have also been established in 19 schools to educate students on the dangers of trafficking and promote vigilance.
“NAPTIP has set up watchdog groups in 24 communities across the state to strengthen grassroots efforts aimed at preventing human trafficking and protecting vulnerable persons,” Ms Offor said.
She urged the public to report suspected trafficking cases through the agency’s emergency short code, 627 and via 08033333627.
She appealed to landlords and landlords’ associations in Ebonyi State to submit BVN, NIN and workplace ID cards as mandatory requirements for prospective tenants to curb human trafficking.
Ms Offor opined that the measure would help track individuals who would often rent houses, abduct neighbours’ children after a few days and disappear without leaving any trace.
She also appealed to the state government, corporate organisations, and philanthropists to support the command with utility vehicles.
She said that providing shelter for rescued victims would enhance its operations and improve the care given to survivors of trafficking.
Ms Offor admonished parents and caregivers to be more alive to their parental responsibilities to their children and wards.
