The ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, has already witnessed 12 own goals, equalling the figure recorded at the end of the Russia 2018 tournament.

The 21st edition of the World Cup featured 32 teams divided into eight groups of four. While 48 matches were played in the group stage, a total of 64 matches were played throughout the tournament.

However, the ongoing 23rd edition of the World Cup, with a new format featuring 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four, will see 72 matches in the group stage and a total of 106 matches throughout the tournament.

The increased number of matches means more World Cup records, both for the right and wrong reasons, are likely to be broken, including the record for the highest number of own goals.

The ongoing edition, with some final group-stage matches and the knockout rounds still to be played, is set to surpass and possibly double the 2018 record.

1) Ellyes Skhiri – Tunisia

Skhiri’s third-minute own goal in Tunisia’s final Group F match on Friday helped eventual group winners the Netherlands secure a 3-1 victory, equalling the World Cup record of 12 own goals. The Carthage Eagles had already crashed out of the tournament before the match after losing their opening two group games against Japan and Sweden.

2) Yassine Bounou – Morocco

Haiti’s Lenny Joseph made a skilful tap-in in the 10th minute of their final Group C match on Wednesday. However, the goal was later ruled an own goal by Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Morocco, however, won the match 4-2 to qualify for the round of 32 with seven points, having also defeated Scotland and drawn with Brazil.

3) Mahmud Abunada – Qatar

Abunada’s own goal in the 34th minute helped Bosnia and Herzegovina defeat Qatar 3-1 in their final Group B match on Wednesday. Qatar are currently the only team at the ongoing tournament to have scored more than one own goal, thereby equalling their tally from the 2022 edition, which they hosted. They also share the record with Bulgaria at the 1966 World Cup and Russia, who also hosted the tournament, in 2018. Qatar were eliminated after securing only one point in the group, which came against Switzerland, and suffering a heavy defeat to co-hosts Canada.

4) Abduvohid Nematov – Uzbekistan

On June 23, Nematov’s 60th-minute own goal in Uzbekistan’s second Group K match made it 4-0 for Portugal in their eventual 5-0 defeat. Uzbekistan are yet to earn a point after also losing to Colombia and have already crashed out of the tournament, with one group match left against DR Congo.

5) Hassan Al-Tambakti – Saudi Arabia

Al-Tambakti’s own goal in the 49th minute sealed Spain’s 4-0 victory in their second Group H match on June 21. The Asian side have one point from two matches after also drawing with Uruguay. With their final group match against Cape Verde still to come, Saudi Arabia will be hoping for a win while also relying on Uruguay not to defeat Spain to stand a chance of qualifying for the round of 16.

6) Cameron Burgess – Australia

In one of the two second-round Group B matches on June 19, Burgess’ 11th-minute own goal opened the scoring for the USA in Australia’s 2-0 defeat to the co-hosts. Australia, however, finished second in the group with four points from three matches, having defeated Turkey and drawn with Paraguay to qualify for the round of 32.

7) Mohamed Manai – Qatar

In Qatar’s second Group B match against co-hosts Canada on June 18, Manai scored an own goal in the 75th minute of the Asian side’s 6-0 defeat. It was Qatar’s second own goal of this edition of the World Cup. Qatar were eliminated after securing only one point in the group, which came against Switzerland, and losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

8) Yazan Al-Arab – Jordan

Al-Arab’s own goal in the 76th minute of Jordan’s opening Group J match against Austria contributed to their 3-1 defeat on June 17. Jordan also lost to Algeria and have already crashed out of the tournament despite having one group match remaining against Argentina on June 28.

9) Aymen Hussein – Iraq

In the 94th minute, Iraq’s Hussein scored Norway’s fourth goal in their 4-1 defeat in the opening Group I match on June 16. The Asian side, who are yet to earn a point, also lost to France and have already been eliminated, with one match left against pointless Senegal, who have also crashed out.

10) Mohamed Hany – Egypt

After Egypt took the lead in the 19th minute of their opening Group G match on June 15, Hany scored an own goal to hand Belgium a valuable point. Putting that disappointment behind them, Egypt won their second match to top the group with four points. They need only a draw against Iran in their final group match to qualify for the round of 16.

11) Miro Muheim – Switzerland

Switzerland opened the scoring through a 17th-minute penalty in their opening Group B match against Qatar on June 13. The Europeans looked set for victory, but Muheim had other ideas. He turned the ball into his own net in the 94th minute to deny his side all three points. Switzerland responded by winning their remaining two matches against hosts Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina to finish top of the group with seven points and qualify for the round of 32.

12) Damián Bobadilla – Paraguay

Bobadilla scored the tournament’s first own goal in the seventh minute of Paraguay’s opening Group D match against the USA on June 13, which they lost 4-1. Paraguay finished third in the group with four points. Having completed all their group matches, they will now hope results elsewhere favour them and secure them a place in the round of 32.
