The Chairman of Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State, Tunbosun Aruwe, on Saturday said sanitation should be a daily civic duty, not a monthly exercise.

Mr Aruwe stated this while leading the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in the Itire community, urging residents to embrace cleanliness as a lifestyle for healthier living.

He described indiscriminate dumping of refuse as a criminal offence and warned that violators would face the full weight of the law.

The chairman advised residents to bag and store waste properly for collection by Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators and Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) personnel.

He also encouraged residents to report PSP failures to the council rather than resorting to illegal waste disposal, which endangered public health.

Mr Aruwe appealed to residents to stop dumping refuse in drainage channels, noting that clean drains were vital to flood prevention and safety.

He said environmental cleanliness must be embraced as a collective responsibility, stressing that it was essential for public health and community development.

The chairman was joined by the Managing Director of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegeshin, the Vice Chairman, Semiu Karaole, and the council secretary, Basirat Yusuf.

Also present were councillors, supervisory councillors, head of environment department, Taiwo Awonuga, special advisers, environmental officers, and accredited service providers.

The exercise involved clearing refuse, removing debris, and cleaning streets, with Mr Aruwe personally participating to demonstrate his administration’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Sarah Adeniyi, a community leader, and Wale Saheed, a youth representative, commended Mr Aruwe’s efforts, pledging support for his developmental agenda.

After the exercise, Mr Aruwe and his team visited Oba Tajudeen Odubiyi, the Onitire of Itireland, who offered royal blessings and praised his leadership.

The monarch described Mr Aruwe’s sanitation drive and infrastructural initiatives as commendable, praying for wisdom, strength, and continued success in Mushin.
