A 21-year-old man was rescued on Monday after being trapped under rubble for more than 106 hours as the death toll from Venezuela’s twin earthquakes surpassed 1,700.

Jorge Rodriguez, president of Venezuela’s National Assembly, said on state TV on Monday that more than 1,700 people have died as a result of the earthquakes, while more than 5,000 have been injured.

Amid the devastation and the huge loss of life caused by the earthquakes, however, the 21-year-old man was rescued from the rubble on Monday. He was reportedly rescued in La Guaira state, Venezuela’s port region, which was ravaged by the earthquakes.

Rescue efforts have continued, with sniffer dogs also deployed to aid the operation. Hundreds of buildings collapsed as the earthquakes ripped through La Guaira state and parts of Caracas, the South American country’s capital.

The international community, including the United Nations, the United States government and the Pope, has sympathised with Venezuela over the devastating earthquakes and promised support for the country.
