CSO decries Osun violence ahead of governorship election

A civil society organisation (CSO), The Osun Masterminds (TOM), has expressed concern over the rising wave of election-related violence in Osun State ahead of the governorship election.
The Executive Director of TOM, Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, expressed the concern on Tuesday while delivering the June edition of the organisation’s “State of the State” address in Osogbo.
Mr Oyedokun-Alli called on security agencies to urgently arrest and prosecute those responsible for the recent killings and attacks in the state.
He said those found culpable should be subjected to appropriate sanctions without political interference to curb recurring incidents of violence and public disturbances.
“Sanctions and severe punishment must be enforced without political manoeuvring to check the activities of those involved in serial killings and public disturbances,” Mr Oyedokun-Alli said.
The TOM executive director also expressed concern over the increasing use of social media to spread fake news, misinformation and cyberbullying.
He warned that such activities could heighten political tensions and fuel violence ahead of the election.
“We appeal to political actors, security agencies, the electoral umpire and residents to prioritise peace ahead of the governorship election.
“Violence and misinformation have the potential to undermine the credibility of the poll,” the TOM executive director said.
He also urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, community-based organisations and residents to promote peaceful coexistence and discourage actions capable of triggering unrest.
Mr Oyedokun-Alli further called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a level playing field for political parties through the timely deployment of election materials, strict compliance with electoral laws and a transparent process.
He also advised eligible voters, particularly young people, not to allow themselves to be used as instruments of violence, saying “voting is a constitutional right that should be exercised peacefully and responsibly.”
