Paraguay declares public holiday to celebrate team’s World Cup win over Germany

President Santiago Pena has declared public holiday for Paraguayans to celebrate their national football team’s round of 32 victory over Germany in the ongoing World Cup.
Mr Pena signed Decre No. 6280, declaring public holiday in the South American country.
“Today, an entire country celebrates,” Mr Peña said on X on Tuesday, posting a picture of himself in Paraguay’s team jersey signing the decree, the national team and a copy of the decree.
“It celebrates the victory of a team that represents the deepest part of our identity: the grit, the faith, and the strength of people who never give up,” Mr Pena said.
After an intense game that ended 1-1 draw in extra time, Paraguay stunned four-time world champions Germany winning 4-3 on penalties.
Paraguay’s victory is one of the biggest upsets in the ongoing World Cup and the competition’s history.
Ecuador President Daniel Noboa also announced a national holiday last week after his country defeated Germany 2-1 victory in their Group E game to book their spot in the round of 32.
