2026 World Cup: Mexico defeat Ecuador 2-0, advance to round of 16

Goals by Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez, in the 22nd and 31st minutes, respectively, on Wednesday in their round-of-32 tie against Ecuador at the Estadio Azteca, have fired co-hosts Mexico into the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The match was characterised by a one-hour delay due to stormy weather.
Piero Hincapié became the second player at the 2026 World Cup to be shown a red card for covering his mouth while speaking, during a confrontation.
The result is Mexico’s first World Cup knockout-stage win since 1986, when it last hosted the tournament, and it is now unbeaten in 10 World Cup games at the Azteca.
Mexico have now set up a round-of-16 tie on Saturday at the same venue, against the winner of Wednesday’s round-of-32 clash between England and DR Congo.
