The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Ondo has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to uphold the outcome of the party’s primary elections conducted in the state.

Gbenga Fasua, ALGON chairman in the state, also appealed to the leadership of the All Progressives Congress during a news conference in Akure on Wednesday.

The conference was attended by chairmen of the 18 local government areas.

Mr Fasua, also chairman of the Akure South council area, explained that the chairmen’s position was not a protest against the party but an appeal to preserve the credibility and integrity of the APC’s internal democratic process.

According to him, the party’s primary elections, held between May 16 and 23, were supervised by a duly constituted electoral committee and produced candidates through a transparent and credible process.

“The council chairmen are concerned by reports that names different from those that emerged from the primaries later surfaced as candidates for some positions.

“We are not challenging the authority of the party leadership but seeking a review based on the results announced at the conclusion of the primaries. We are not making any protest. Whatever the party’s decision, it is supreme, and we abide by it. We are party lovers and abide by the decision of the party.

“As chief security officers of these 18 local governments where the elections took place, we were there. We monitored and heard the results that were announced. What we are trying to do is, based on the election that was conducted here, to uphold the decision of the election conducted here. We stand by both the primary conducted here and the decision, which was the outcome,” he said.

The ALGON chairman also said the 18 council chairmen had written to Mr Tinubu, commending his commitment to democratic values.

He lauded Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for his leadership in maintaining peace and unity in the state and urged APC members to remain united and await the party’s final decision on the matter.
