A public notice in Ogun State has warned women to avoid routes designated for traditional worshippers’ processions during the Agemo festival rituals.

It noted that the festival would feature masquerades and deities deemed taboo for female eyes.

“This is to inform the general public that all Agemo will arrive in Ijebu-Ode today between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. Members of the public are kindly advised to take note and cooperate with the necessary traditional protocols,” the notice said on Monday.

The notice specifically warned women against using the designated routes and participating in the rituals.

“Women are strongly advised to keep away from the procession and designated routes during this period,” it added.

It is unclear what consequences violators of the restrictions may face, particularly what measures traditional worshippers might impose on them.

The Ogun State police command declined to comment on whether women will be protected from disciplinary action by traditional worshippers for deliberately or unintentionally violating the curfew.
