At least 11 people have been killed and eight injured as wildfire ravages Los Gallardos, Almería, in Southern Spain.

While rescue efforts are ongoing, authorities said about 19 people are unaccounted for at the moment, suggesting casualties could increase.

Regional president, Juanma Moreno, in a post on social media on Friday, said the impact of the fire was “devastating”.

“There are 19 people unaccounted for. At least 11 dead. And 8 injured, 4 of them seriously,” Mr Moreno said. “We are all focused on caring for those affected, and the response team is working tirelessly to contain the fire as soon as possible.”

In a statement on X on Friday, Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, said authorities were “working with the utmost collaboration between institutions to address this tragedy”.

According to him, all the material and human resources of the Spanish government have been deployed to put out the fire and care for the people affected.
