Spain are through to their first World Cup semi-finals since 2010, courtesy of a late winner 2-1 from Mikel Merino over Belgium in their quarter-final clash at Los Angeles Stadium on Friday.

Spain took the lead in the 30th minute after breaking through Belgium’s defence, with Fabian Ruiz converting a perfect opportunity, following a well-worked effort from Lamine Yamal and Pedro Porro.

The Belgians levelled the game just before half-time, with a pinpoint cross from Timothy Castagne finding Charles De Ketelaere, who headed the ball home for his side.

Rudi Garcia’s side suffered a huge blow as Thibaut Courtois came off injured after making four key saves for Belgium, with Senne Lammens stepping in as his replacement.

Spain made a late change, bringing on super-sub Mikel Merino, who repeated his heroic performance after his late winner against Portugal.

His introduction inspired another victory, as he scored from close range after Pau Cubarsí’s shot was spilled by Lammens, allowing the substitute to restore Spain’s lead late in the game.
