The speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, and the national woman leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adenike Ogunshe, have expressed relief over the rescue of abducted students and teachers in the Oriire community of Oyo State.

Mr Obasa and Ms Ogunshe lauded the rescue of the 44 pupils and teachers in separate statements on Saturday.

The speaker, in a statement by his chief press secretary, Dave Agboola, commended President Bola Tinubu, the police, the Nigerian Army, and Governor Seyi Makinde for their efforts.

He commended their dedication and resilience, noting that the operation and rescue had restored hope and comfort to the affected families and the nation at large.

Mr Obasa rejoiced with the families of the rescued victims while extending heartfelt condolences to those who lost loved ones in the ordeal.

He assured them that the Lagos House of Assembly was in solidarity with them, praying for their healing and strength.

The speaker also lauded the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) for their unflinching support for their colleagues throughout the crisis.

He recalled that on June 2, 2026, members of the Lagos State wing of the NUT marched to the Lagos assembly to demand urgent action on the ordeal of the teachers and students.

Mr Obasa described their advocacy as a powerful demonstration of unity within Nigeria’s educational community.

“This rescue is a reminder that when government institutions, security agencies, and communities work hand in hand, we can overcome even the gravest challenges.

“May this victory inspire renewed commitment to the safety of our schools and the protection of our children,” Mr Obasa said.

Similarly, Ms Ogunshe described the rescue as a development that had brought renewed hope and relief to the victims’ families and Nigerians at large.

She called for sustained prayers and collective efforts toward achieving lasting peace, security, and national unity.

“As we celebrate their freedom, let us continue to pray for lasting peace, security, and unity across our nation,” she added.

The victims were kidnapped from their schools in Ahoro-Esiele in the Oriire LGA of Oyo State on May 15 by armed abductors.

However, after 58 days in captivity, they were rescued on Friday through the joint efforts of security agencies and local vigilante groups.
