At least 44 people have been killed across southern Bangladesh after days of heavy rainfall, which triggered floods and landslides, leaving more than a million people stranded without food or shelter.

Over 200,000 households have been affected by the flooding across seven districts of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Moulvibazar, and Habiganj, with damaged roads, bridges, and network communication lines.

Many households remain trapped in their communities, stranded without food, clean water, and electricity.

In the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, home to over a million refugees, landslides claimed the lives of 16 refugees, including women and children, adding to the overall death toll.

The destruction caused by the rainfall has slowed emergency response because major roads and bridges are blocked, making immediate rescue efforts in some of the worst-hit communities difficult.

The Bangladesh army and navy have been deployed to deliver essential supplies by boat to isolated communities.

Minister of Disaster Management and Relief Iqbal Hossain, during a visit to one of the affected communities in Chattogram, said the government is doing “everything possible” to ensure the safety of its residents.
