The Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court has convicted and sentenced a 45-year-old man, Dennis Dogo, for stealing a mattress.

Mr Dogo will serve 40 days of sweeping court premises for stealing the mattress valued at N206,000.

Mr Dogo, a resident of Ungwan Pama, Kaduna, was charged with criminal conspiracy and stealing.

The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, sentenced Mr Dogo after he pleaded guilty to theft.

Mr Emmanuel held that the court was lenient toward the convict because he pleaded guilty, thereby sparing the judge’s time.

He advised Mr Dogo to stop committing crimes and find something meaningful to do instead of indulging in criminal activity.

He stated, “The court will not be lenient with you if you continue with the life of crime.”

Earlier, the prosecutor, Chidi Leo, had told the court that the matter was reported by Mary Samson on Wednesday.

Mr Leo said Mr Dogo and two others at large broke into Ms Samson’s shop located at Sabon Tasha, Kaduna, and stole a Mouka mattress.

He said the convict was caught and handed over to authorities by a security guard, while the two others fled.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
