Kwara assembly backs malaria elimination

The Kwara House of Assembly has reaffirmed support for efforts to eradicate malaria and expand healthcare infrastructure across the state.
Chairman of the House Committee on Health and Nutrition, Seun Ogunniyi, gave the assurance during the launch of the 2026 Integrated Malaria Campaign on Wednesday in Ilorin.
Mr Ogunniyi praised improvements in Kwara’s health indicators under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration, describing recent achievements as significant and encouraging.
He said the administration prioritised preventive healthcare through environmental sanitation, nutritional support and community engagement programmes.
According to him, the preventive measures form part of coordinated efforts to reduce malaria and other disease burdens, especially among pregnant women and children under five, and to improve campaign results.
“The administration has consistently prioritised preventive healthcare strategies to safeguard the well-being of our people,” Mr Ogunniyi said.
He pledged continued legislative backing for policies and programmes to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve public health outcomes across Kwara, with the goal of sustaining the campaign’s gains.
Olufolake AbdulRazaq, wife of the governor, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving universal health coverage for every resident. She applauded frontline health workers, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, local government chairmen, their spouses and development partners for supporting the campaign.
Mrs AbdulRazaq urged parents and caregivers to cooperate fully with community drug distributors throughout the exercise.
“Ensure every eligible child receives the complete preventive treatment during this campaign,” she appealed.
The governor’s wife, who serves as Kwara’s Health Promotion Champion and Ambassador, administered Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine plus Amodiaquine (SPAQ) to selected children.
She also presented insecticide-treated mosquito nets to parents to strengthen household protection against malaria transmission during the rainy season.
The seasonal integrated malaria campaign targets high-risk local government areas by distributing preventive medicines and insecticide-treated mosquito nets.
Supported by the Federal Ministry of Health and development partners, the initiative seeks to significantly reduce malaria transmission during the peak rainy season across participating states, strengthening the overall impact of the campaign.
