The Abeokuta Magistrate’s Court, Isabo Division, on Thursday, sentenced two men to a year’s imprisonment each for stealing a generator valued at N1.1 million.

The defendants, Mohammed Tijani, 25, and Abah Yusuf, 23, both of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing.

Delivering her judgement, the magistrate, O.T. Odunbanjo, convicted the defendants following their guilty plea to the charges.

Ms Odunbanjo subsequently sentenced each convict to one year’s imprisonment for conspiracy and burglary, but with an option of a N25,000 fine on each count.

She also sentenced each convict to six months’ imprisonment for stealing, with an option of a N10,000 fine.

The magistrate said that the sentences should run concurrently.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Opeyemi Lawal, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on July 9 at about 8:00 p.m., at Bamigboye Village, Ogunmakin.

Mr Lawal said the convicts conspired and broke into the tyre shop of Olayemi Peter, where they stole a Firman generator valued at N1.1 million.

He said the defendants were arrested while attempting to transport the stolen generator on a commercial motorcycle.

According to him, police investigation revealed that Mr Yusuf had engaged a commercial motorcyclist to convey the stolen generator.

“However, the motorcyclist recognised the shop and alerted Peter, leading to the arrest of the defendants,” he said.

Mr Lawal said that the offences committed contravened Sections 383, 390(9), 411 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
