A senior magistrate of a Dutse Magistrates’ Court, Evelyn Dara, on Thursday ordered an unemployed man, Usman Mohammed, to sweep the court premises for one day for stealing a cellphone.

Ms Dara gave the order following a guilty plea entered by Mohammed after his arraignment by the police.

The senior magistrate held that she gave Mohammed a non-custodial sentence because he admitted to the charge.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Otobha Okpa, informed the court that Abdulrahman Mohammed reported the matter at the Tungamaje Divisional Police Headquarters, Abuja.

Mr Okpa said that on July 1, Mohammed broke into the complainant’s parked truck and stole his Samsung phone worth N250,000.

He said that during police investigation and interrogation, Mohammed could not give a satisfactory account of his actions.

The police said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 288 of the Penal Code Law.
