Venezuela twin earthquakes death toll hits 5,000, over 16,000 injured
At least over 5,000 have died and more than 16,000 injured in Venezuela’s deadly earthquakes.
Venezuela’s National assembly head, Jorge Rodriguez, posted on July 17 official update on deaths and injuries recorded so far as a result of the earthquakes.
The post by Venezuela’s National assembly leader showed that 5,069 people have been killed, while 16,740 sustained varying degrees of injury in the earthquakes.
So far, 6,462 have been rescued, 21,235 have been moved to a safe camp and 17,907 people rendered homeless by the earthquakes.
At least 856 Buildings were affected by the earthquakes, while about 190 building collapsed completely.
In late June, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake first hit the country, followed by a second 7.2-magnitude earthquake.
The earthquakes tore through La Guaira state, a port town, and also affected some part of Venezuela’s capital, Caracas.
The international community, including the United Nations, American government and Catholic Pope, sympathised with Venezuela over the devastating earthquakes, promising support for the country.
