The late organising secretary of the Lagos State council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, also known as Toba Ijaya, has been laid to rest.

The burial service was held on Tuesday.

Videos obtained by the Peoples Gazette on Tuesday showed a crowd of mourners, friends, community leaders, residents, family members and colleagues gathered at the burial service held at the deceased’s home in Ereko, Fadeyi area of the state.

Security personnel, including officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), attended the funeral ceremony and assisted in managing the emotional crowd.

The ceremony was also attended by personalities including the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu; NURTW members and leaders including Abdulazeez Lawal, popularly known as Kunle Poly, as well as Christian and Muslim clerics who prayed for the bereaved relatives and paid tribute to the deceased.

Mr Ajiboye died on July 14, days after he was attacked by gunmen, who riddled the vehicle he was in with bullets, during his return trip from a political event in the Fadeyi area.

He was initially reported to have survived the attack before news of his death emerged. 

Mr Ajiboye’s death triggered anxiety, leading to police presence in Fadeyi and neighbouring communities in the Somolu Local Government Area of the state.

The Lagos State police spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, told the Gazette at the time that security operatives had been deployed to the area to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident and restore normalcy. 

The command has since not issued a statement regarding the incident.

The police did not immediately respond to calls to confirm whether an investigation had commenced to identify the suspects behind the murder of the union leader.
