Okoro takes over from Emekah as GOC 6 Division, vows to sustain increased oil output
A new General Officer Commanding (GOC), Maj.-Gen. Everest Okoro, has assumed duty at the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Mr Okoro’s assumption of duty followed the recent redeployment of 19 gnerals across army formations and units nationwide.
At a handover ceremony in Port Harcourt on Friday, the outgoing GOC, Maj.-Gen. Emmanuel Emekah, formally presented Mr Okoro as his successor.
Mr Emekah expressed confidence that the new GOC would sustain the division’s professionalism and transformation drive in line with the vision of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen, Waidi Shaibu.
He also expressed optimism that Mr Okoro would consolidate peace in the Niger Delta and sustain efforts that had contributed to increased crude oil production.
“When I assumed command on January 24, 2025, Nigeria’s daily oil production stood at about 1.3 million barrels per day. Today, output has risen to approximately 1.5 million barrels per day through the commitment of troops of the division,” he said.
Mr Emekah commended officers and soldiers of the division for their discipline, loyalty and cooperation, describing their support as key to the achievements recorded during his tenure.
He also cautioned troops against acts capable of undermining the image of the Nigerian Army and the nation.
In his remark, Mr Okoro thanked the chief of army staff for entrusting him with the responsibility of commanding the division.
Mr Okoro, who also assumed office as the Land Component Commander of the Joint Task Force (South South), Operation Delta Safe, pledged to build on the achievements of his predecessor.
He stated, “Under my command, troops will continue to protect critical infrastructure and work towards sustaining increased oil production for greater revenue generation for the nation.”
He appreciated Mr Emekah for his mentorship and congratulated him on what he described as a successful tenure, wishing him success in his new assignment.
The 6 Division coordinates army operations in Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Rivers states.
