Many injured, buildings damaged as earthquake sweeps Japan
Several people were injured after an earthquake hit Japan on Tuesday.
The quake, measured at a magnitude of 7.1, ripped through Kumamoto on Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu.
The development triggered tsunami advisories for the nearby Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas on the western coasts of Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Fukuoka and Saga prefectures about 900 kilometers southwest of Tokyo.
The advisories were, however, lifted within two hours after no tsunami was detected.
While details of affected people remained unclear, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said there were reports of a number of injuries and damages to roads, bridges and buildings, as well as blackouts and fire.
“We are putting people’s lives as the top priority,” AFP quoted Ms Takaichi as saying.
Ms Takaichi urged caution in strongly shaken areas that could be at risk of possible aftershocks for the next two to three days.
The latest development came years after Kumamoto experienced a significant earthquake that left 50 dead and others severely injured.
