Nigeria’s Samuel Ogazi has won Nigeria’s first gold medal in the men’s 400m at the Commonwealth Games while Ella Onojuvwevwo claimed bronze in the women’s 400m final at the Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland, on Saturday.

Ogazi’s performance put Nigeria back on the map, setting a new Commonwealth Games record of 44.25 seconds to win the men’s 400m title.

The 20-year-old finished well ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards, who won silver in 44.82 seconds, while Zakithi Nene clocked 45.21 seconds to take the bronze for South Africa.

The feat marks Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal in the men’s 400m title, since Sunday Bada won bronze at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, clocking a time of 45.45 seconds.

Meanwhile, Ella Onojuvwevwo clinched bronze in the women’s 400m final, clocking 51.00s to become the first Nigerian woman to win a medal in the event since Fatima Yusuf at the Commonwealth Games.

The 21-year-old finished behind Jamaica’s Dejanea Oakley, who won gold in 50.21 seconds and Barbados’ Sada Williams, who earned the silver medal in 50.99 seconds.

Nigeria’s medal haul at the 2026 Commonwealth Games increases to 20 medals, with ten gold medals, six silver and four bronze at the games.
