The UK Health Security Agency has issued heat-health alerts for eight regions of England, warning that rising temperatures this week may increase health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups.

The agency, in a statement on Sunday, said amber alerts would be in place for the East Midlands, East of England, South East and London regions from 9:00 a.m. on Monday to 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the North West, Yorkshire and The Humber, West Midlands and South West regions would be under a yellow alert during the same period.

The agency noted that any impacts would likely include increased use of health care services by vulnerable populations and an increase in risk to health for individuals aged over 65 years or those with pre-existing health conditions, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

“Periods of hot weather can result in serious health outcomes, especially for older adults, and it is therefore important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun,” the agency’s acting consultant in public health, Polly Ashmore, said.

While urging preparedness and support especially for older people, Ms Ashmore advised people to stay hydrated, avoid the sun during the hottest part of the day, and keep their home cool.

The update came after the agency said an estimated 2,877 people died as a result of intense heatwaves between May and June, with 2026 likely to record the highest number of heat-associated deaths on record in the UK.

It added that the estimated figure was almost double the 1,504 heat-related deaths recorded in 2025.
