At least 111 killed as 7.4 magnitude earthquake hits Colombia
Newly sworn-in President Abelardo de la Espriella on Monday confirmed that at least 111 people were killed as a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Colombia.
In a broadcast, Mr Espriella explained that the earthquake left 87 people injured to varying degrees, while 61 buildings collapsed and 1,575 homes were severely damaged.
“The priority is to try to rescue the people who are still under the rubble,” the president said.
Mr Espriella also said 18 health centres, 52 educational centres, 17 community centres and 18 roads were damaged as a result of the earthquake.
Meanwhile, the Department of State announced the U.S. would commit $15.5 million in funding to Colombia for shelter, food, and protection for victims.
“We are united in prayer with the Colombian people and stand ready to support President (Abelardo de la Espriella) and his government as they assess the needs on the ground,” it stated on Monday.
