Floods: Residents urge FCTA to intensify drainage maintenance in Kubwa

Residents of Kubwa in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have urged the FCT Administration (FCTA) to intensify routine desilting and maintenance of drainage channels in the community to reduce flooding during the rainy season.
The residents made the call against the backdrop of recurring flooding in parts of the community, particularly areas including PW, 2/2, and Phase 3.
They said blocked and poorly maintained drainage channels often caused stormwater to overflow onto roads and adjoining properties after heavy rainfall.
A resident of PW, Ezekiel Dazang, said regular desilting of the drains would help to improve the flow of stormwater and minimise flooding.
“Whenever it rains heavily, the water comes out of the drainage and floods the road.
“We need the authorities to clear these drains regularly before the situation gets worse,” he added.
Another resident, Solomon Danjuma, explained that some residents had been forced to spend money cleaning and repairing properties affected by floodwater.
“Some of us have spent money cleaning our compounds and repairing some things that were damaged by floodwater. It is becoming an additional burden for residents.
“The government should not wait until the rainy season is already causing problems before desilting the drainage channels. They should make it a routine exercise,” he stated.
On her part, Farida Ibrahim attributed the blockage of some drainage channels to indiscriminate dumping of refuse, particularly plastics, bottles, food waste, and other debris.
Ms Ibrahim appealed to the FCTA to ensure regular clearing of the drainage channels while urging residents to desist from dumping refuse into them.
According to her, effective drainage maintenance required cooperation between the authorities and residents.
“Residents also have a responsibility. People should stop throwing plastics, bottles, and other refuse into the drains because it makes the problem worse,” Ms Ibrahim said.
Other residents who spoke said prompt action by the authorities would help to protect roads and properties, reduce the financial burden associated with flood damage, and make movement easier during the rainy season.
They expressed hope that the FCTA would respond to their concerns by making routine desilting and maintenance of drainage channels a priority across Kubwa.
Environmental experts have emphasised that regular maintenance of drainage systems was essential for effective flood control, protection of public infrastructure, and safeguarding public health.
They warned that stagnant water caused by blocked drains could create breeding grounds for mosquitoes and increase the risk of waterborne diseases.
