Coventry City confirm signing of Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest

Coventry City have confirmed the signing of Nigerian centre-forward Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth €9 million.
The club confirmed the signing on Monday, as the centre-forward expressed his excitement about joining the club in their 25-year return to England’s top flight following their remarkable season in the Championship under head coach Frank Lampard.
“I’m very happy to complete my move to Coventry City,” Awoniyi said.
“I am very excited about this season, and I can’t wait to get started.
“I’m really looking forward to working with my new teammates. I have seen how amazing they have been last season, coming up from the Championship, they were incredible, and now I am just excited to join them and get started for the new season.”
In his farewell game, Awoniyi was honoured with a guard of honour by the club’s players and staff before Forest’s 2-0 pre-season friendly win against Brest on Sunday.
Before making his move to the City Ground, the centre forward had several loan spells while he was signed to Liverpool.
The loan spells improved his experience and his attacking prowess. Awoniyi got recognised by Union Berlin in 2020, where he played a season on loan before joining the club from Liverpool on a temporary move.
In 2022, Awoniyi signed with Nottingham Forest in a record fee worth €17.2 million and after four seasons at the City Ground, made 90 appearances and scored 23 goals in all competitions.
The Nigerian striker becomes the sixth signing for the club in the summer transfer window following the arrivals of Gus Hamer, Carl Rushworth, Loum Tchaouna, Aurele Amenda and Caleb Yirenkyi.
