Cape Verde have appointed Humberto Bettencourt as the national team’s new head coach, following the departure of former manager Pedro Leitão Brito, popularly known as Bubista.

The Cape Verde Federation confirmed the appointment of its long-serving assistant coach following Bubista’s departure to lead Moroccan side RS Berkane.

Bettencourt’s new role comes after six years working alongside Bubista.

The federation also highlighted the manager’s wealth of experience with the Blue Sharks, with the concluded 2026 World Cup serving as a key example of the country’s progress.

In their debut at the World Cup, they drew three games against Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia and advanced to the last 32, before losing to Argentina in a dramatic 3-2 match.

The 51-year-old’s major test as the Blue Sharks’ head coach will be the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, which kick off in September.
