Two Air Canada employees arrested for cocaine, cannabis trafficking
Two Air Canada employees have been arrested on Wednesday in connection with an alleged drug-trafficking scheme smuggling cocaine and cannabis at Montréal-Trudeau International Airport in Canada.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that the suspects were apprehended and accused of carrying out a drug trafficking scheme involving cocaine and exporting cannabis.
Before their arrest, and with Air Canada’s cooperation, investigators executed search warrants at two residences and a vehicle in the greater Montreal area.
Also, they searched the employees’ workplace in Dorval, Quebec.
Investigators and the airport’s authorities discovered that the suspects work in ground operations at Air Canada and had allegedly used their access to restricted areas of the airport as part of a conspiracy to run the scheme.
The probe into the case began in May, after the Canada Border Agency intercepted 62.5kg of cocaine concealed in travel luggage that was flown in from Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
Authorities also seized 56kg of cannabis linked to the same drug network.
The RCMP said it would question the two individuals before releasing them pending further proceedings.
The police added that investigations remain ongoing and that the evidence recovered could lead to more arrests and charges.
