The South African BRICS Youth Association (SABYA), in partnership with the University of South Africa (UNISA), will host the fifth BRICS Summer School South Africa 2026 in Pretoria. 

The two-day event is scheduled for September 2 and 3, 2026, at the University of South Africa, with the theme “Innovatively Inclusive Futures for BRICS and the Global South”.

The summer school will bring together about 150 participants for an intensive programme of learning, dialogue, networking and international exchange.

Participants ‌⁠‍‍⁠⁠‌‌⁠⁠⁠⁠‌⁠‌from 12 countries have already been confirmed for the event, which will provide opportunities for young people to engage with issues shaping BRICS and the Global South.

The opening ceremony will feature keynote addresses by Sindisiwe Chikunga, Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, and Thandi Moraka, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation.

The programme will explore issues including the history and development of BRICS, financial and economic cooperation, opportunities within BRICS, reform of global governance and the New Development Bank.

It will also examine diplomacy and the changing role of the Global South while providing participants with opportunities to exchange ideas and develop networks across participating countries.

The summer school will provide a platform for students, researchers, young professionals, academics, entrepreneurs, youth leaders and other participants to engage experts through lectures, interactive discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions.

“The BRICS Summer School is about ensuring that young people are not merely observers of changes taking place within BRICS and the Global South but are equipped with the knowledge, networks and platforms required for the future.

“Bringing together young people from 12 countries provides an important opportunity to strengthen people-to-people relations and build a new generation of globally engaged young leaders,” Raymond Matlala, CEO of SABYA said.

The two-day programme will feature lectures and discussions on BRICS cooperation and opportunities, financial cooperation, global governance reform and the New Development Bank.

It will also create opportunities for meaningful engagement between local and international participants, fostering knowledge exchange and strengthening youth participation in discussions on the future of the Global South.
