The chairman of Mushin Local Government Area, Tunbosun Aruwe, said the council had taken proactive measures to tackle incessant flooding.

He said in a statement on Thursday that a vigorous carting-away exercise was ongoing along Adigun Street, Itire.

According to him, the exercise, being carried out with an accredited service provider, aimed to clear accumulated waste and ensure free flow of storm water.

He said the exercise would prevent blockages that could cause flooding on adjoining roads and streets.

“Our administration is committed to protecting lives, property and the environment through sustained sanitation and drainage maintenance.

“We cannot afford to wait for flooding before taking action. We will remain proactive in ensuring that our drainage channels and environment are properly maintained,” he said.

Mr Aruwe said the council would continue to ensure the free flow of storm water and promote the safety of residents.

The chairman appealed to residents to support the local government’s efforts by adopting responsible waste disposal practices.

He also urged them to refrain from dumping refuse into drainage channels and waterways.

The chairman of the Amu Market Association, Mushin, Tajudeen Hassan, commended Mr Aruwe for his sustained commitment to improving the environmental condition in the community.

He said the association supported the chairman’s ongoing environmental campaign and development agenda.

Mr Hassan said the government could not keep Mushin clean alone, adding that traders and market users had important roles to play.

He said traders and market users should ensure that waste generated from commercial activities was properly managed.

“We urge our members and other residents to cooperate with the local government by avoiding dumping refuse on roads, medians and other public spaces.

“The local government has given the association the opportunity to engage directly with residents and stakeholders on the environmental challenges confronting the community,” he said.

A resident, Lateef Ajenifuja, also commended the local government for its proactive measures against flooding and environmental hazards in the area.

“This is the kind of intervention residents want to see. We are happy that the local government is not only talking about development but is also taking action,” he said.
