Norway’s King Harald dies at 89
The King of Norway, King Harald V, is dead.
He was 89.
The Royal Palace said on its official website that he died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet at 6:35 a.m. on Friday.
The monarch was born on February 21, 1937, after spending 35 years on the throne. He succeeded his father, King Olav V, who died in January 1991.
His death also comes after recent health complications he had faced, including haemolytic anaemia, a blood disorder for which he had been receiving treatment.
The Royal Court described his condition as “very serious” on Thursday.
He married Queen Sonja in 1968, and they had two children, Crown Prince Haakon, 53, and Princess Märtha Louise, 54.
Prince Haakon has succeeded him and is expected to convene an extraordinary council of state with the government on Friday.
